Who Is Toronto Raptors' Marquis Nowell
Marquis Nowell is the latest player to join the Toronto Raptors on a two-way contract after the NBA Draft. The 5'8"guard has become an overnight sensation due to his performance in Kansas State's 2023 March Madness run, which saw them reach the Elite Eight. Muggsy Bouges, the NBA's shortest player of all time, praised Nowell for his ability and poise on court. Despite going undrafted in the draft, Nowell has made history by becoming one of only two undrafted players from K-State to make it into the NBA. He will be making his first appearance for Toronto in Summer League play starting July 7th.
Professional Basketball Career
After unexpectedly going undrafted, Marquis Nowell has become a sensation in the NBA, having agreed to a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors and setting an NCAA Tournament record for assists in a single game - an amazing feat which earned him praise from Muggsy Bouges. Nowell is expected to make his first action for Toronto in Summer League play starting on July 7. He brings with him a unique playing style, featuring blazing speed and excellent court vision. His potential development within the Raptors system will be something to watch out for as he looks to make his mark at the next level.
Nowell's size might have been seen as a disadvantage but this has not stopped him from becoming one of the more exciting prospects in recent drafts. The team fit could not be any better as Toronto has had some success with undrafted players such as Wichita State's Fred VanVleet. On top of that, former forward Dean Wade also went from two-way contract player to full-time NBA player or Nowell may follow suit. With his summer league performance likely to give us an indication of what he can bring if given regular minutes on the court it could be worth keeping tabs on how his career progresses over time.
His ability to lead K-State all the way to Elite Eight during their 2023 March Madness run was no coincidence either - it showed that when needed he can step up and perform exceptionally well under immense pressure. His all-time assist record set against Michigan State in Sweet 16 only strengthens this point further too. Despite being undersized compared to most guards, he still manages to be effective by using lightning quickness off the ball and incredible passing abilities; something which will serve him well at higher levels of competition if he keeps improving upon these skillsets and others while at Toronto Raptors 905 too (their G League affiliate).
It's been quite the journey for Markquis Nowell who thanked everyone who played their part after signing his contract - now it will just come down whether or not he can continue proving people wrong about his size by showcasing why he deserves more attention than originally thought out of college when Summer League starts soon enough!
College Basketball Achievements
You dazzled in college basketball, setting an NCAA Tournament record with 19 assists against Michigan State in the Sweet 16 while also earning First Team All-Big 12 and All-Defensive Team honors. Markquis Nowell was a sensation during his college career that even caught the eye of Muggsy Bouges, the NBA's shortest player of all time. He put together an impressive list of accolades:
- Agreed to a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors after the NBA Draft.
- Led K-State in scoring with 17.6 ppg and averaged 8.3 assists during his final season.
- Set NCAA Tournament record for assists with 19 against Michigan State in Sweet 16.
- Named First Team All-Big 12 and All-Defensive team honours as well as Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by U.S Basketball Writers Association for performance against Texas.
Nowell's ability to perform at such a high level despite being undersized is something that not many athletes can do and speaks volumes about his skill set and determination. His incredible run to the Elite Eight was just another example of how he could make an impact no matter what stage he was on or who he faced. The future looks bright for this young star as he embarks on his professional journey with the Toronto Raptors organization, becoming one more success story from March Madness and a testament to what hard work and dedication can achieve when it comes to achieving your dreams!
Undrafted to NBA
Despite being overlooked on draft night, Marquis Nowell's hard work and dedication paid off as he agreed to a two-way contract with an NBA team. The 23-year-old Harlem native had heard about his height holding him back his entire life. He used it as fuel to prove people who don't believe in him wrong. Nowell has faced many challenges throughout his basketball career, but was determined to make it to the NBA no matter what.
Nowell starred in basketball at Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn and The Patrick School (N.J.) before averaging 17.2 points as a sophomore at Arkansas-Little Rock. From there, he led Kansas State to the Elite Eight and averaged 8.3 assists in college - setting the all-time assist record of 19 during a Sweet 16 overtime win against Michigan State last year. Despite not being expected to be drafted due to his smaller stature, Nowell took part in 10 NBA workouts and showed that his height wouldn't hold him back on the defensive end - even impressing one team enough for them to say he had the best workout of any guard they brought in!
Challenges Faced | Success Factors |

Nowell sought out several short guards for their insight and input, including Muggsy Bogues, Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas, Jose Alvarado of the Pelicans who helped him find his agent Ron Shade of Octagon, Isaiah Thomas from the Celtics and Tremont Waters, who was drafted 51st by Boston but has since played overseas. This support system pushed Markquis towards success despite facing numerous obstacles. His training regimen also helped build up strength for when physicality is needed while playing defense or going up against bigger players during games; this will help Nowell stay relevant even if the size is an issue down the line for him personally or other short guards trying to break into professional basketball leagues like himself did with Toronto Raptors 905 G League affiliate team after signing a two-way contract following the Draft!
Nowell's future prospects look bright considering how far he's come already - from small-town high school star player up through college ball into professional sports leagues worldwide! He is determined to keep short guards relevant and put on for them, using his journey as motivation for those who don't think they can do something because of their size or background - showing that anything is possible if you have drive & dedication toward your goals like Markquis did!
Honours
You can't deny the sheer number of awards and honours Marquis Nowell has achieved in his illustrious career, including being named the 2023 Bob Cousy Point Guard Award Winner and receiving recognition from numerous prestigious organizations such as the USBWA and NABC. His accolades also include being an NCAA East Regional Most Outstanding Player, two-time NABC All-District First Team member, two-time USBWA All-Region First Team member, All-Big 12 First Team selection by league coaches and AP, two-time Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection, Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List honoree, John R. Wooden Award Late Season Watch List member, Naismith Trophy Award Midseason team member and a Midseason Second Team All-American by The Sporting News.
In addition to all these recognitions, Nowell was honoured three times as Big 12 Player of the Week at Kansas State University and was even named MVP/All-Tournament team at the Cayman Islands Classic in 2022. He holds records for most assists in an NCAA tournament game with 19 assists against Michigan State in the Sweet 16 back in 2023. He is a two-time academic award winner with Jack Hartman Top Defensive Player Award (2022) and Keith Amerson Academic Award (2022).
Nowell's success doesn't stop there either; he was included on several honour rolls and awarded the Bob Boozer Courage Award (2022). These accomplishments show that Marquis Nowell is not only a talented basketball player but also someone who puts dedication into their academics, making him one of today's best players.
It is easy to see why Marquis Nowell has had so much success throughout his collegiate career; he exhibits a remarkable skillset and unwavering determination, allowing him to be recognized for all his achievements. His journey to becoming an NBA player shows that hard work truly pays off no matter what obstacle may come your way.
Career Highlights
Experience the thrilling journey of an underdog turned NBA star as you witness Marquis Nowell's career highlights. From transferring to Kansas State University in April 2021 to making his mark at the NCAA Tournament, Marquis Nowell has had a remarkable journey:
- Agreed to a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors after the NBA Draft!
- Led K-State in scoring with 17.6 ppg and averaged 8.3 assists during his final season!
- Became a sensation during K-State's 2023 March Madness run to the Elite Eight, setting a record of 19 assists against Michigan State in Sweet 16!
Not expected to be drafted due to his smaller stature, Markquis Nowell proved doubters wrong through hard work and dedication. During this time he also earned praise from Muggsy Bouges, the NBA's shortest player of all time. Soon after, he thanked everyone who participated in his journey to the NBA before heading into Summer League play starting on July 7th for Toronto.
Markquis Nowell inspires those who have been told they are too small or not good enough - proving that anything is possible when you put your mind towards it! With 131 games under his belt throughout college and now ready for action at the NBA level, it will be exciting to see what happens next for this humble basketball star from Little Rock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who owns Toronto Raptors'?
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is the owner of the team. MLSE also owns the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, MLS's Toronto FC, the CFL's Toronto Argonauts, the AHL's Toronto Marlies, and the Toronto Rock lacrosse team.
What is the longest time that the Raptors have been together?
Toronto Raptors is an NBA basketball franchise. The Raptors joined NBA in 1995 as an expansion club, alongside the Vancouver Grizzlies. The Raptors were the only Canadian-based NBA team when the Grizzlies moved from Vancouver to Memphis in 2001-02.
Toronto Raptors' home games are played at Scotiabank Arena. The arena is also used by the Maple Leafs, the city's NHL team. The Raptors have made 13 appearances in the NBA playoffs since their inception. Most recently, they lost 6 games against the Philadelphia 76ers during the first round in 2021.
The Raptors made their first playoff appearance in 1999-2000. In the first round, the Raptors were swept by New York Knicks division rivals.
The fans were few and far between, and the team wasn't too exciting either. There wasn't anything to root for, nor was there anyone who cared. The team finally decided to change their image after years of mediocrity and made every effort to appeal to the public.
In 2001, the team hired a professional advertising agency to help develop a marketing strategy that would make them famous in national markets. They came up with the slogan "Hear us roar" using creative thinking.
At the time, the team was struggling financially, so they used the slogan to promote the fact that the games were sold out. The only thing they needed was a catchy phrase, and a great logo. This is where the creative genius of the agency shines through. They combined "hear me roar" and "never forget to die", a popular saying. This became the Toronto Raptors' official motto.
What was it like to be a Toronto Raptors fan for the first year?
The Toronto Raptors first season in the NBA proved to be difficult. Brendan Malone was hired by Isiah Thomas to be the head coach. The team quickly acquired many talented players through drafts and trades. They lost to the Chicago Bulls one time that season, but they ended up with a 21–61 win-loss record overall.
Toronto drafted Marcus Camby in 1996. He was named Rookie of Year and was part of the starting lineup with Alvin Williams as point guard. Later in 1997, Damon Stoudamire was traded away, and more changes to the roster were made over the following years as Toronto looked to build a foundation for future successes.
Despite all its changes, the team continues to struggle in its first few NBA seasons. Toronto finally made it to the playoffs in 2000 after a period for rebuilding and transition. Unfortunately, the New York Knicks won the series.
When did the Raptors win its first playoff series in their history?
Toronto won their inaugural playoff series when they defeated New York 3-1 in 2001. They reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2001 for the first and only time under Lenny Wilkens.
