Frequently Asked Questions

What year did the Raptors beat Chicago Bulls?

On March 24, 1996, the Raptors beat the Chicago Bulls, who would win the NBA Championship that year. Final score: 109-108. Michael Jordan attempted to win the Bulls' game with a last-second shot, but it failed because it occurred after the final buzzer had sounded.

How did the Raptors win this year's NBA championship?

DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors), Jakob Poltl as well as a protected 2019 first round draft pick were traded to the San Antonio Spurs by the Toronto Raptors on July 18, 2018.

On February 7, 2019, Jonas Valanciunas was traded to the Raptors for Delon Wright, C.J. Miles, along with a 2024 second-round selection draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly afterwards.

The Toronto Raptors had an exciting offseason. They made two major trades that shocked the NBA. DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl and a 2019 first round draft pick (that was not protected) were first traded by the Raptors to the San Antonio Spurs. In return, they received Kawhi Lenard and Danny Green from Spurs. They traded Jonas Valanciunas and Delon Wright C. J. Miles and a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies were traded for Marc Gasol--another All-Star, former Defensive Player-of-the-Year. These moves have put the Raptors in a strong position to challenge for the NBA title. Let's examine each trade.

The trade for Kawhi Leonard was a risk-reward move for the Raptors. Leonard is a top-5 league player when healthy and coming off a MVP-caliber season. He was injured and only played nine games last year, so there are concerns about his long-term well-being. The Raptors decided that the reward outweighed the risk and made the deal. Leonard has been performing at an All-Star level so far. He has been in good health. He is averaging 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while shooting 49% from the field and 38% from three-point range. If he can keep his health, he will give the Raptors a real shot at winning the NBA title.

Marc Gasol's trade was more a short-term deal than anything else. Gasol is in his mid-30s and is clearly past his prime. Yet, he is still a solid player who can bring valuable experience to a young Raptors roster. He's averaging 15 points per game, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and shoots 45% from the three-point line. C.J., Delon Wright and other young talents were given up by the Raptors. Miles was acquired by Gasol. However, the Raptors believe his expertise will prove to be valuable during playoffs.

The Raptors got off to a 6-0 start, winning their 16th game on November 23rd (breaking their franchise record for the best start through 20 games with a 16-4 record); reaching 20 wins quicker than any time in their history when they won 24th game of the season on December 1st against Cleveland Cavaliers; breaking the franchise record for most points scored in franchise history after beating Washington Wizards 140-138 points after double overtime on January 13th. The Raptors were cautious with Leonard, resting him for more than 20 games throughout the season to prevent worsening his previous injury. They managed to win the 2nd East seed. This was only two points behind the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors went on to have a successful run in the playoffs, dispatching the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. Leonard was named Finals' MVP as the Raptors won the first title against the Golden State Warriors.

The Toronto Raptors had an extremely successful offseason. It paid off big. With two All-Stars on the roster, the Raptors are poised to be contenders for years to come. They have demonstrated that they can make bold moves and take risks if it means putting together a championship-calibre team. It will interesting to see if their success continues in the future.

When was the Raptors' first game?

The Raptors vs. New Jersey Nets was their first regular-season match at the SkyDome. Alvin Robertson scored the franchise's first points with 33,306 supporters in attendance. The Raptors defeated the Nets 94-79 with contributions from Damon Stoudamire (10 points and 10 assists) and Robertson (30 pts).

Who owns the Toronto Raptors?

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the owners of this team, owns it. MLSE is also the owner of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, MLS’s Toronto FC, and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. The AHL’s Toronto Marlies and the Toronto Rock lacrosse teams are all part of MLSE.

When did the Raptors win their first playoff series?

Toronto won their first ever playoff series, defeating New York by 3-2 in 2001. The team advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals for only the second time under Lenny Wilkens as head coach.

How was the Toronto Raptors' inaugural year of existence?

The first season of the NBA for Toronto Raptors was difficult. Isiah Thomas became GM and hired Brendan Malone as head coach of the new Raptors franchise in 1995, and the team soon acquired several talented players in the draft and through trades. They defeated the mighty Chicago Bulls once that season, but overall they finished with a 21-61 win-loss record.

Toronto drafted Marcus Camby in 1996. Camby became Rookie Of The Year and was a part of the starting line up with Alvin Williams, at point guard. Later in 1997, Damon Stoudamire was traded away, and more changes to the roster were made over the following years as Toronto looked to build a foundation for future successes.

Despite all the changes, the team struggles throughout its first few seasons in the NBA. Toronto finally reached the playoffs in 2000, after much rebuilding and transition. But it was defeated by the New York Knicks.

How many NBA teams are there in Canada?

The Toronto Raptors, as of 2001 are the only Canadian NBA basketball team. The Vancouver Grizzlies used to be an NBA team between 1995 and 2001. In 2001, however, they relocated to Memphis where they became the Memphis Grizzlies. Canada had two NBA teams, the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors, for a short time in late 1990s. However, there is no NBA team in Canada. Canadians are avid basketball fans and often travel to the United States in order to catch games. The Toronto Raptors are a well-known and popular team that has been around since 1995. They continue to attract large audiences for home games at Scotiabank Arena. Hundreds of Canadians also travel annually to attend the NBA All-Star Weekend in the United States. Canada is home to more than one NBA franchise, thanks to its population of 38 million. Many North American basketball fans have debated the possibility of a second team. The Toronto Raptors are the only Canadian team in the NBA.
